Spring Retreat ~ How to Build Spiritual Experience

How to Build Spiritual Experience

A Life of Great Meaning and Joy

Spring Retreat with Kadampa Buddhist Monk & Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Khedrub

(Partial booking is available.)

“ When we understand clearly that inner peace is the real source of happiness, and how, through spiritual practice, we can experience progressively deeper levels of inner peace, we will develop tremendous enthusiasm to practice. ”              - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Over 2,500 years ago, Buddha gave sublime teachings on how to become more peaceful, confident and compassionate, and how the real source of happiness is inner peace. Since inner peace and all those good qualities can be cultivated through spiritual practice, we can see that by taking Buddha's teachings to heart and contemplating their meaning, we can build stable and authentic spiritual experiences in our heart.

This retreat will explore the very essence of Buddha's teaching and offer a variety of ways that we transform our spiritual knowledge into spiritual experience. No previous experience of meditation is required. Everybody welcome!

*Accommodations are available for those engaging in this retreat. The rooms are in limited quantity. For further information and to submit a request, please click here.*

Drop-in Class ~ Stay Focused: Dealing with Distractions

Stay Focused

Dealing with Distractions

Wednesday Morning Class with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Buddha placed great value on concentration. Many of his teachings explain how move into deeper and deeper states of concentration, which he called “absorptions”.  But you don’t have to be an experienced meditator to appreciate the value of such a deep state of concentration. We have all experienced absorbing into a project and getting into ‘the flow’. Unfortunately, this experience doesn’t happen often for most of us as we are easily distracted.

Through training in concentration using a simple object such as the breath and developing the skill of watching our mind, we can develop alertness to help us maintain our concentration. Once we experience the inner peace of concentration in meditation, we can prevent our mind from wandering to meaningless distractions in our daily lives.  This 3-week series will explore ways to improve our concentration, keep ourselves focused and abandon distractions.

August 16: The basics of meditation – training in mindfulness

August 23: Why we get distracted and how to catch it at its early stages

August 30: Tips on how to stay focused

Meditations for Clarity of Mind
Half-Day Meditation Retreat

“When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arises from within.”  - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

The real source of happiness is inner peace. If our mind is peaceful, we will be happy all the time, regardless of external conditions, but if it is disturbed or troubled in any way, we will never be happy, no matter how good our external conditions may be.  In this half-day meditation retreat we will learn how to meditate on the mind itself with a sequence of beautiful and profound meditations taught by Buddha. With regular practice, these meditations help us to experience mental clarity and a deep and profound inner peace.

Through training in concentration observing our own mind we can overcome distractions and come to experience for ourself the inner peace arising from the clarity of the mind. This way of meditating also overcomes quickly our worries, anxiety, negative thoughts and other mental busyness. It connects us directly to our limitless essential nature - our root mind, which is like an ocean of inner peace and bliss at our heart.

Stay Focused: Dealing with Distractions

Stay Focused: Dealing with Distractions

Tuesday evening weekly class

August 15: The basics of meditation – training in mindfulness

August 22: Why we get distracted and how to catch it at its early stages

August 29: Tips on how to stay focused

Although taught as a series, each class is self-contained and can be attended individually. Drop in anytime. Classes include two guided meditations and a practical teaching. Each class will be followed by complimentary refreshments and a Q and A in our community room. Everyone is welcome!

The Mirror of Dharma

How to Find the Real Meaning of Human Life
Wednesday morning weekly class

'Dharma' means the teachings of enlightened beings. These classes are based on the book Mirror of Dharma by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.  They give practical advice on how we can solve our daily problems of uncontrolled desire, anger and ignorance, and how to make our human life truly meaningful through the practice of the Lamrim.

In particular, we will be learning about a beautiful poem written by the great Buddhist master, Je Tsongkhapa.  The verses of this poem teaches us how to meditate on love and compassion for all living beings.  By meditating on these verses we can awaken our love and compassion for others and develop the deep and sincere wish to become a Buddha, an Enlightened being for the benefit of all.

Although taught as a series, each class is self-contained and can be attended individually.  Drop in anytime.  Classes include two guided meditations and a practical teaching.  Each class will be followed by complimentary refreshments and a Q and A in our community room.  Everyone is welcome!

How to Train in Happiness

How to Train in Happiness

4-Week Series
Tuesday evening drop-in weekly class

Happiness is a state of mind, and like any state of mind it can be strengthened through training. But to do so we need to know what are the actual causes of happiness. According to Buddha, authentic happiness does not depend upon amassing specific external conditions, such as wealth, beauty, status, etc., but rather its main ingredient is inner peace. And meditation is essential for training in inner peace and happiness.

In this series of classes, Gen Thekchen will guide us in practical methods of training in happiness. He will take us through specific meditation techniques that are designed to help us experience and maintain authentic happiness, and he will explain how we can continue to train in these positive states during our daily activities. Training in these meditations will profoundly influence our conception of our selves and others, and of our purpose in this life. We will discover the relationship between happiness and our love of others. This, in turn, will lead to a recognition of our incredible spiritual potential for an ongoing and continuous experience of happiness, and even enlightenment. With this understanding we can learn how to bring this profound happiness into the lives of others.

June 27: Tapping into our limitless potential for happiness through meditation

July 4: The happiness that comes from love and gratitude

July 11: The happiness that comes from rejoicing in other's happiness

July 18: The happiness that comes from a mind of generosity

Although taught as a series, each class is self-contained and can be attended individually. Drop in anytime. Classes include two guided meditations and a practical teaching. Each class will be followed by complimentary refreshments and a Q and A in our community room. Everyone is welcome!
