Tuesday Drop-in Class ~ How to Help Those Who Have Died

How to Help Those Who Have Died

The Buddhist practice of
transference of consciousness (powa)

Two-week course with Resident Teacher
Gen Kelsang Chodor

In this short series of practice classes, we will explore the Buddhist understanding of what happens at the time of death and after death, and how we can actively help those who have recently died to take a fortunate rebirth.

In particular, we will focus on the practice of Powa, or transference of consciousness — a profound Buddhist meditation practice in connection with prayers to Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. This practice is used to benefit those who have recently died, helping them to transition from this life to their next life with peace, clarity, and great good fortune.

These classes are based on the book Living Meaningfully, Dying Joyfully by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. They are suitable for both new and experienced students who wish to deepen their understanding of death, rebirth, and how to help others after they have passed away.

Note: These practice classes also serve as a meaningful preparation for a special half-day course, “Essential Wisdom of Death and Dying,” with Buddhist monk Gen Rabgye on Saturday, March 28.

  • These classes are held in the peaceful, spacious and comfortable meditation room at Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada. We also have many books and other meditation materials available at our Temple shop which can help you deepen your understanding of the meditation experience through further study.
