Healing with Every Breath - a taking & giving retreat

Healing with Every Breath - a taking & giving retreat

Healing with Every Breath

a taking & giving retreat

with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

Deeply rooted in the Kadampa Buddhist tradition is a practice called “Mounting Taking and Giving Upon the Breath”.

It is renowned for its ability to open the heart and bring a profound sense of healing and inner peace.

By combining breathing meditation with the practice of Taking and Giving, we gradually shift the mind away from self-centred patterns and towards a more spacious and altruistic way of being.

This practice strengthens concentration, deepens our love and compassion, and builds a wealth of positive energy.

In this way, even the simple act of breathing becomes a powerful spiritual practice.

At first, we engage in this practice during formal meditation sessions, but with familiarity it can gradually be carried into daily life.

Through steady practice, our mind gradually develops the compassionate intention of a Bodhisattva.

Everyone is warmly welcome to attend this powerful guided retreat.

Meditate for World Peace

FREE - Everyone Welcome!

In these turbulent times, it is crucial that we develop peaceful minds to enable the emergence of a more harmonious world. The format of this class was designed by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche so that people have a special method to create the causes for world peace.

Classes include a short teaching and advice for life, two guided meditations, and inspiring prayers for world peace. Everyone is welcome!

*Copies of Prayers for World Peacel Prayer booklets are available in the meditation room to use during the session. If you wish to purchase your own copy of the booklet, you can do so by visiting our bookstore in person or buying a downloadable or paper copy online. Click here to purchase it online from the Tharpa Publications Canada website.

Advice from Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, 2001

"World peace is very important; we cannot ignore this now. Once something happens, it will be too late. This world is now, as you know, very delicate, very fragile, and very sensitive. It is almost as delicate as the life of a single person; the world situation is so delicate. This is because there are so many disagreements. Political leaders are ready to fight; everybody is preparing weapons ready to fight, and are challenging each other. So we religious practitioners need to offer prayers because prayers are very powerful. This is because of our pure motivation, the powerful words of the prayers themselves, and especially at such times enlightened beings will bestow their blessings upon us, our environment and other living beings. So we should pray for world peace. We have had two world wars. If there is a third world war this will almost destroy the world because every country has very powerful weapons, and it is very easy to destroy the world. So I would like to suggest that every center organizes prayers for world peace at any time when local people can gather and pray for world peace."

Buddha’s Return From Heaven Day

September 22 marks the celebration of Buddha’s Return from Heaven Day.

The following explanation is an extract from a talk given by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso on this day in 1991:

‘On this day we celebrate Buddha’s return from the desire god realm called Land of the Thirty-three Heavens, where he had been to visit his mother who had been reborn there.

Traditionally this day also marks the end of the summer retreat. Every year, during the summer months, Buddha did a three-month retreat with his disciples. His reason for doing this was to avoid harming insects and other animals…

A Half-Day Silent Retreat

Experience the Transformative Power of Mantra in Silence

Saturday, Oct 3rd | 10am - 1pm

Kadampa Buddhist World Peace Temple
631 Crawford St, Little Italy (see map)

This guided silent retreat offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with the ancient practice of mantra recitation - a practice designed to calm the mind, dissolve mental distractions, and bring about profound inner transformation.

Throughout the retreat, we will be guided in meditations on the breath using the timeless mantra OM AH HUM, known as the “mantra of all Buddhas.”

For thousands of years, this mantra has been recited to cultivate the qualities of enlightened body, speech, and mind, offering a path to clarity, inner peace, and a good heart.

Inspired by the compassionate mind of Bodhichitta, the mantra will be recited quietly (mentally), allowing its transformative power to unfold naturally within.

This retreat is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience.

Everyone Welcome!

Wednesday Drop-in Class Finding Peace in Difficult Times

Finding Peace in Difficult Times

with Kelsang Zopa

Every day we face challenges in life—from small things like stubbing a toe or getting stuck in traffic, to larger difficulties such as conflict, disappointment, loss, or relationship challenges.

While we cannot always control what happens to us, we can learn to control how we respond and our inner experience of these situations.

In these classes, we will explore practical meditations and ways of thinking that help us remain peaceful and positive when we encounter difficulties in life. By responding to difficulties with wisdom and patience, we can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and inner development.

“When things go wrong in our life and we encounter difficult situations, we tend to regard the situation itself as our problem, but in reality whatever problems we experience come from the mind. If we were to respond to difficult situations with a positive or peaceful mind, they would not be problems for us; indeed, we may even come to regard them as challenges or opportunities for growth and development.”
— How to Transform Your Life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Whether you are new to meditation or have some experience, you are warmly invited to join us. Meditations are practised seated on chairs or on cushions, your choice.

Thursday Drop-in Meditation Class ~Meditation Made Easy - Reconnect with Peace (3 week series)

Meditation Made Easy
~Reconnect with Peace~
(3 week series)

Wake up and smell the roses! Our minds are often racing—from one thought to the next, processing our “to-do” lists, worrying about the future, or holding on to the past. All these thoughts make us restless and make it difficult to relax and feel at peace.

In this series, we learn meditations that bring our awareness into the present moment, allowing negative thoughts to dissolve and helping us reconnect with our natural mental calm. Through this practice, we can carry the experience into daily life, operating from a space of calm and positivity rather than stress and anxiety.

These classes are held in the peaceful, spacious, quiet and comfortable meditation room at Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada which include two guided meditations and a practical talk on a weekly topic, followed by time for Q&A.

Each class is self-contained, so feel free to drop in whenever you can! Afterward, please stay for complimentary refreshments and social time - it’s a great chance to chat, discuss the lesson, and ask any further questions.

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

with Kelsang Rigma

Buddhism offers a practical path for transforming our mind and improving our daily experience of life.

Through meditation and training in positive states of mind, we can gradually reduce stress, worry, and unhappiness, and instead develop qualities such as patience, compassion, and wisdom.

Buddha Shakyamuni said:
You are your own protector, and you are your own enemy.

This points to a powerful truth: our experiences of happiness and suffering depend largely on our own mind and how we respond to life’s challenges.

On this course, we will explore how to follow the Buddhist way of life in a practical and accessible way.

We will learn how to rely upon the Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma (his teachings), and Sangha (our spiritual friends) - to help us gradually transform our mind from states of stress and negativity into states of peace, clarity, and compassion.

In this way, Buddhist practice becomes something we can bring into daily life, helping us respond to difficulties with greater wisdom and creating the causes for lasting inner peace and happiness.

This is a practical and encouraging introduction to Buddhism and the Buddhist way of life, suitable for those completely new, as well as those with some experience.

Wednesday Drop-in Class ~ Meditation and Love, Desire & Attachment

Love, Desire & Attachment

4-week series with Kelsang Zopa

In these meditation classes, we will learn how to bring more harmony, joy, and peace into our relationships by understanding the difference between love, desire, and attachment. These different minds are often confused, and in close relationships we may mistakenly think that our love itself is the cause of the pain we experience.

Buddha taught that love can never cause us problems, but the “sticky” mind of attachment can. When we cling to others to fulfil our wishes, we become emotionally dependent, and like a balloon in the wind, we lose inner stability and mental freedom.

Through developing pure love, we can care for others without clinging and discover a stable source of happiness within our own mind.

Whether you are new to meditation or have some experience, you are warmly invited to join us. Meditations are practised seated on chairs or on cushions, your choice. Each class includes two guided meditations and a practical talk on a weekly topic, followed by time for Q&A. Each class is self-contained, so you are welcome to join at any point.

Half-Day Mala-making Workshop with Rose Hirano

Join in this fun and meaningful experience... a mala, like a rosary, is a string of beads used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra.

For Buddhist practitioners, this ritual object is revered as precious, becoming more powerful and meaningful the more it is used.

Both beautiful and spiritual, it is often carried with them or kept very close by.

Using beads of a wide variety of colors and materials, full length malas traditionally have 108 beads.

During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to make a mala of your choice to use as your personal mala, give as a gift, or donate to the centre Bookstore & Shop.

Classes are held in the peaceful, spacious, and comfortable meditation room at Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada. After class there will be complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to chat.

We also have many books and materials available at our Temple shop to help people deepen their learning and experience.

No previous experience of meditation is required.  Everybody welcome!

In these turbulent times, it is crucial that we develop peaceful minds to enable the emergence of a more harmonious world. The format of this class was designed by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche so that people have a special method to create the causes for world peace.

Wake up and smell the roses! Our minds are often racing—from one thought to the next, processing our “to-do” lists, worrying about the future, or holding on to the past. All these thoughts make us restless and make it difficult to relax and feel at peace.

Buddhist Art: The Wheel of Life

with Vieslav Krystyan

Even if we contemplate deeply the most sublime works of art, we cannot gain benefits that compare with the benefits of contemplating and meditating on the diagram of the Wheel of Life, because this diagram reveals the complete path to enlightenment.

- Joyful Path of Good Fortune by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

The Wheel of Life is a beautiful piece of Buddhist art, inspired by Buddha himself, that illustrates the complete path to enlightenment.

Within it are Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths, showing us what we need to understand, abandon, practise, and attain in order to find true and lasting happiness.

It also depicts the Twelve Dependent-Related Links — a chain of cause and effect that reveals how we become bound within samsaric suffering.

This course will offer a practical and contemplative tour of the Wheel of Life, showing how we can use this powerful diagram to inspire our meditations and guide us along the spiritual path.

During the morning break, complimentary refreshments, tea, coffee, and snacks will be available in our community room - a relaxed opportunity to rest, ask questions, and connect with others.

The Temple shop will be open throughout the day, offering books and meditation resources to support your practice.

Everyone is welcome.

Meditate for World Peace

FREE - Everyone Welcome!

***Due to unforeseen circumstances, this Sept 6 class is cancelled. Sorry about it.***
Class will resume next week.
