Spring Retreat ~ How to Build Spiritual Experience

How to Build Spiritual Experience

A Life of Great Meaning and Joy

Spring Retreat with Kadampa Buddhist Monk & Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Khedrub

(Partial booking is available.)

“ When we understand clearly that inner peace is the real source of happiness, and how, through spiritual practice, we can experience progressively deeper levels of inner peace, we will develop tremendous enthusiasm to practice. ”              - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Over 2,500 years ago, Buddha gave sublime teachings on how to become more peaceful, confident and compassionate, and how the real source of happiness is inner peace. Since inner peace and all those good qualities can be cultivated through spiritual practice, we can see that by taking Buddha's teachings to heart and contemplating their meaning, we can build stable and authentic spiritual experiences in our heart.

This retreat will explore the very essence of Buddha's teaching and offer a variety of ways that we transform our spiritual knowledge into spiritual experience. No previous experience of meditation is required. Everybody welcome!

(Portugal Festival 2013 Revisited)

In October 2013 Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche gave his last public teachings in Portugal. During these teachings, Geshe-la granted the empowerment of Great Mother Prajnaparamita, taught the Essence of Wisdom Sutra (Heart Sutra), which contains the heart essence of Buddha’s perfection of wisdom teachings, and gave commentaries to The Blissful Path, the condensed self-generation sadhana practice of Buddha Vajrayogini and to The Uncommon Yoga of Inconceivability, the special instruction of how to reach the Pure Land of Vajrayogini with our present human body.

During this Festival, these teachings will be revisited by Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong and Gen-la Kelsang Jampa. By helping us to take these teachings deep into our hearts, we can attain deep experience of them, thus transforming our lives and drawing us closer to attaining full enlightenment.

Special Course ~ Creating an Extraordinary Life

Creating an Extraordinary Life

Highest Yoga Tantra: The Quick Path to Enlightenment

Special Weekend Course with Kadam Morten Clausen

When Buddha taught, he did so according to the spiritual capacity of those listening. Consequently, he taught at many different levels. The highest of all Buddha’s teachings are the practices of Highest Yoga Tantra. To actually engage in these practices, we first need to receive a Highest Yoga Tantra empowerment. However, even before receiving this empowerment, we can begin to incorporate aspects of these transformational practices and their insights into our lives.

The practices of Highest Yoga Tantra allow us to incorporate Buddha’s insights into our lives in an extraordinarily creative and joyful way. Based on the profound insight that our mind creates our reality, Tantric practices enable us to harness the most powerful aspects of our mind.

Through the use of imagination and faith, in conjunction with our wisdom and compassion, we can create the most extraordinary life. Through learning to imagine what the experience of being enlightened is like, we can create a vision of our future enlightenment. This inspires us to take full advantage of the extraordinary life that we are currently living.

No previous experience of meditation is required. Everybody welcome!

Special Event ~ Attaining Fearlessness

Attaining Fearlessness

Starting 2024 with Purpose & Confidence

Special New Year's Eve Event with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Begin 2024 with a fresh start and positive mindset!  Join us for our annual New Year's Eve event where, with candle-lit chanted prayers and guided meditation, we ring in the New Year with fearlessness, confidence and beneficial intentions. Gen Kelsang Chodor will first give a talk about setting our intentions for 2024, then offer a brief introduction to the traditional Buddhist practice of ‘Liberation from Sorrow’, a series of chanted prayers offered to the twenty-one Taras.

Tara is a female Buddha, a manifestation of the ultimate wisdom of all the Buddhas. The name ‘Tara’ means ‘Rescuer’. She is so called because she is known to bestow fearlessness, spiritual power and confidence, while fulfilling the wishes of practitioners for a happy, meaningful life.

After the talk, we will engage in six sessions of chanted prayers over a period of 24 hours. In the evening, between sessions, we will enjoy light refreshments and the company of fellow practitioners. Join us for the talk, a few sessions or the whole event. Everyone is welcome!

Guided By Love ~ Ontario Dharma Celebration

Guided By Love

Ontario Dharma Celebration 2023

Blessing Empowerment of Buddha Maitreya, the Buddha of Loving-kindness, and Teachings on the Three Aspects of Love with Gen Samten Kelsang

Love is very beneficial, even when it is mixed in our mind with desirous attachment.  Love is the foundation for all harmonious, enduring relationships.  If we love our friends and our family, we will be happy, even if we have little material wealth.  But, without love, no amount of wealth or resources will enable us to create loving, long-lasting relationships.

This year at the Ontario Dharma Celebration, Gen Samten Kelsang will be granting the blessing empowerment of Buddha Maitreya, the Buddha of Loving-kindness and giving teachings on the Three aspects of love.

In his teachings this weekend, Gen Samten Kelsang will help us to understand the difference between love and attachment and how, with wisdom, we can develop and practise loving-kindness in all our relationships.  No previous experience of meditation and Buddha’s teachings is required to attend this event.  This event is open to everyone.  Everybody welcome!

Public Talk ~ Happiness from a Different Source

Happiness from a Different Source ~ How Meditation Changes Everything

Public Talk with International Buddhist Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

" If our mind is peaceful we will be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we will experience true happiness; but if our mind is not peaceful, we will find it very difficult to be happy, even if we are living in the very best conditions. If we train in meditation, our mind will gradually become more and more peaceful, and we will experience a purer and purer form of happiness. Eventually we will be able to stay happy all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances." - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Meditation is an actual scientific method for developping authentic and long-lasting happiness through developing the capacity of our mind. In this Public Talk, we'll see how happiness and unhappiness have their origins in the mind itself and, therefore, by transforming our mind, we can transform our experiences.  This talk is especially suitable for those with a scientific interest in the human mind.  No previous experience of meditation is required.  Everybody welcome!

This Public Talk will take place at the Ontario Science Centre. *FREE Parking*

Canadian Festival 2023

Canadian Festival 2023

An Ocean of Compassion / Un océan de compassion

Canadian Festival 2023 / Festival canadien 2023
with Gen Kelsang Samten / avec Guèn Kelsang Samten

Imagine a world where everyone has a sincere desire to help and protect others from suffering. Since we all have the potential within us to develop this universal compassion, which is our Buddha seed, this goal is definitely possible. Growing our compassion and wisdom, and helping others whenever possible is the true meaning of human life.

During this unique national event, we will have the opportunity to awaken our pure Buddha nature. Gen Kelsang Samten will grant the blessing empowerment of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, and teach us how to become closer to this Buddha in our daily lives, so that we can eventually develop the same good qualities.

Gen Kelsang Samten will teach us how we can increase our love, compassion and bodhichitta, and, in particular, how we can take concrete actions to benefit others by practising the eleven main ways of helping others that were presented by Arya Asanga. By practising these methods, our compassion will continually grow until it becomes an ocean of compassion, the universal compassion of a fully enlightened being, a Buddha.

Public Talk - How to Be Happy

Public Talk: How to Be Happy

Ancient Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Times
with International Teacher & Buddhist Monk Gen Kelsang Samten

When things go wrong in our life and we encounter difficult situations, we tend to regard the situation itself as our problem. But, in reality, whatever problems we experience come from the mind. If we were to respond to difficult situations with a positive and peaceful mind, they would not be problems for us. Indeed, we may even come to regard them as challenges or opportunities for growth and development. Problems arise only if we respond to difficulties with a negative state of mind. Therefore, if we want to be happy all the time and to be free from problems, we must maintain and develop a peaceful mind.

The ancient wisdom of Buddha's teachings gives a refreshing perspective that encourages us to look at life differently. We can solve daily problems, find real inner peace and enjoy deep happiness from practicing these time-honoured meditations and transformative ways of thinking. This talk is open to everyone, Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Everyone is welcome!

The large meditation hall can host about 180 people for meditation classes and retreats.

The hall contains a huge stunning shrine with 16 beautiful Buddha statues, including an 8-foot-tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism in this world. This shrine has been newly resurfaced in 2019 for a lighter and modern look. There are also two 15-ft book cabinets containing the Kangyur and Tengyur, two series of sacred texts of the original teachings of Buddha and their commentaries, installed in 2019.

Nyungne ~ Fasting & Purification Retreat

Praises & Prayers to Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara with Gen Kelsang Thekchen

This two-day retreat, done in conjunction with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara practice, is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. This practice involves taking the Mahayana precepts (a promise to avoid all non-virtue for 24 hours), combined with the practice of prostrations. Through this we improve our mind of compassion. In order to participate in this retreat, you must take precepts at 6:30 a.m. each morning you participate. You may engage in one or two full days of the retreat.

This practice is done over two days, with the eight Mahayana precepts being taken at the beginning of each day. On the first day, it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch. On the second day, we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours. On both days, we do three sessions of meditation, combining prostrations with chanted meditation. Those who are unable to engage in a complete fast can participate in the sessions on the second day, provided they take the Mahayana precepts on that day. The lunch we have on the days we are eating must be free from so called “black foods” which include meat, garlic, eggs, spices and garlic.

Introduction to the Practice: Our Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Thekchen, will give an introduction to the Practice and the Retreat on Friday morning, April 14th, in the first session.  No previous experience of Buddhism or meditation is required.  Everyone is welcome!
