Love, Desire & Relationships

Valentine-themed Friday Evening Talk

with Kadam Morten

Friday, Feb 13

Book Now

In this meaningful and enjoyable Valentine-themed Friday evening talk, Kadam Morten will share Buddha’s timeless wisdom on how we can improve relationships of every kind.

In the talk, we will learn how desirous attachment - also known as “sticky desire” - in our close relationships and friendships is often mistaken for love. In fact, these two minds have opposite effects: love brings happiness, while attachment leads to problems and unhappiness in relationships. Without clear teachings, it can be difficult to distinguish between them. Once we understand the difference, we can enjoy our relationships much more deeply.

Everyone is welcome to this event - bring someone with you if you’d like - stay for a good conversation and chocolate with refreshments.

Exciting News!
Following this event, Kadam Morten will be teaching a special weekend course, Introduction to Tantra on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Tiphaine (a recent course attendee)

“Perfect for beginners who want to learn how to meditate. Absolutely stunning statues of Buddha, and very practical teachings we can easily integrate into our busy life.”

    Ana (Course attendee)

"I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada. As a beginner to meditation I wanted to feel good and confident in my first course. And it was absolutely perfect! Everyone is so welcoming and I also felt I have my space to do and learn on my own time. Highly recommended "

    Delfina (Course attendee)

"Coming to Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada has really changed my life. Through the teachings I’ve been receiving since the first class, I’ve been able to make significant positive changes in my lifestyle. The quality of the classes is extraordinary! I’ve come out of every single one of them feeling more peaceful, loving and compassionate."

    Kodi (Course attendee)

"I've attended a number of weekend retreats and events here. The atmosphere is breathtaking. The volunteers are always so friendly. The teachers are unparalleled. If you are looking for practical ways to bring buddhist philosophies into modern lives, the teachings found here are so powerful."

    Alejandro & Delfina (Retreat Attendees)

"We started attending the classes at KMCC a little over a year ago. We were interested in complementing our meditation practices with the teachings, but we found more than that. The classes gave us powerful tools to deal with our day to day challenges at work and in our relationships. And we feel the breadth of the meditations have also enhanced our experience of inner peace we were looking for. The community is also super friendly and they work hard to bring many diverse programs running all year long. I can’t recommend higher if you are looking to go in and explore your mind. And… don’t miss the informal Q&A after class. Besides the nice complementary tea and cookies/cakes, it is a great opportunity to ask the teachers specific questions about the class and your practice ."

Amitayus Retreat - Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Amitayus Retreat

Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Annual Retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Book Now

The greatest obstacles to the fulfilment of our wish to experience pure happiness are death and ignorance. Death destroys our opportunity to take the essence of our precious human life, and ignorance destroys our opportunity to develop a pure experience of Buddha’s teachings, the Dharma. To overcome these obstacles, we need to increase our lifespan and our wisdom. The principal method for doing this is the yoga of Buddha Amitayus, which is also a special method for increasing the positive power of our mind, or merit.

With a long life, we can complete our spiritual path in this very life. We can also engage in this special practice on behalf others when they are sick or in danger of dying. This traditional retreat is offered each year, usually in January or February. Although this is an in-depth Buddhist practice, it is suitable to everyone. No prior experience of Buddhism or meditation is required. Everyone is welcome!

Experience the Transformative Power of Mantra in Silence

This silent retreat offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with the ancient practice of mantra recitation—a practice designed to calm the mind, dissolve mental distractions, and bring about profound inner transformation.

Throughout the retreat, we will be guided in meditations on the breath using the timeless mantra OM AH HUM, known as the “mantra of all Buddhas.” For thousands of years, this mantra has been recited to cultivate the qualities of enlightened body, speech, and mind, offering a path to clarity, inner peace, and a good heart. Inspired by the compassionate mind of Bodhichitta, the mantra will be recited quietly (mentally), allowing its transformative power to unfold naturally within.

This retreat is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience.

The Public Talk

Is it possible to find genuine peace in this digital age?

The fast-paced development of modern technology and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) are increasing stress and anxiety for most people, but would we say the quality of human life is improving? Is there an actual increase in human happiness? Does living in the digital age mean we’re destined to feel stressed and restless?

Despite all the amazing development we have witnessed in recent years, for many of us, technology has had the opposite effect, leaving us more agitated, distracted, addicted, and even fearful. As AI becomes more accessible, we could eventually lose our ability to think for ourselves, weakening our capacity to find happiness within through the power of our own thoughts and feelings.

In this talk, Gen Samten will share a Buddhist perspective on how to develop our capacity to find genuine peace and contentment while living in this ever-evolving digital age. Discover how to create an inner space of calm through the power of your own thoughts, and how to live with technology without being ruled by it.

32 Year Anniversary - Celebrate With Us!

A Special Weekend at KMCC

You’re invited to join us at our beautiful Kadampa Temple in Toronto to celebrate our 32nd anniversary. Come and rejoice with us in our history, activities, and most of all, yourself and everyone else who make up this spiritual community. How wonderful that 32 years ago Venerable Geshe-la, our Founder and Spiritual Guide, in response to requests of people in Toronto, conceived of a Kadampa Centre in our vibrant city.

On Saturday, our Resident Teacher, Gen Chodor, will be granting the blessing empowerment of Buddha Vajrapani.

Through receiving the powerful blessings of the Buddha of Spiritual Power, we will acquire special inner strength. This will help overcome all inner and outer obstacles to our spiritual practice and activities for the benefit of others. Empowered by these blessings, may we together continue to maintain and cherish our precious Canadian Mother Centre and Temple, KMC Canada, for this and all future generations.

Please join us for the empowerment, teachings, special presentation and community BBQ (or any part of it you wish).

Everyone welcome!

Sunday day-course ~ Everything Works Better With Wisdom

Everything Works Better With Wisdom

Sunday day-course with
Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Zopa
Resident Teacher of KMC Victoria, BC

Take some time out of your busy life to explore practical Buddhist advice on how to stay happy - by finding and developing a source of peace from within. This one stand-alone Sunday day-course might be just what you need to set the stage for discovering genuine happiness.

If you're inspired to go deeper, the Friday session and the Saturday day-course are also stand-alone. You’ll find benefit in attending any single day - or the entire weekend.

Gen Kelsang Zopa - a visiting Buddhist monk and senior meditation teacher - will offer practical advice to help us deal with the challenges of modern living and transform our life into an authentic path of inner development.

The main teachings are based on Advice from Atisha’s Heart, a timeless piece of heartfelt wisdom from the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha, who played a central role in bringing pure Buddhism to Tibet. Deeply admired for his wisdom, humility, and compassion, Atisha’s instructions continue to resonate today - offering clear and meaningful advice on how to live with kindness, peace, and purpose.

By keeping Atisha’s Advice in our heart:

  • we can maintain a peaceful and happy mind

  • our human nature and good qualities will naturally improve

  • we will become a positive example in this troubled world

  • and we will swiftly progress toward the supreme happiness of enlightenment

As Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says,

“Simply putting this Advice into practice we will naturally become a Bodhisattva, a holy compassionate being who is the object of everybody's love and respect.”

Saturday day-course ~How to Live with Kindness, Peace & Purpose

How to Live with
Kindness, Peace & Purpose

Saturday day-course with
Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Zopa
Resident Teacher of KMC Victoria, BC

Take some time out of your busy life to explore practical Buddhist advice on how to stay happy - by finding and developing a source of peace from within. This one stand-alone Saturday day-course might be just what you need to set the stage for discovering genuine happiness.

If you're inspired to go deeper, the Friday and Sunday sessions are also stand-alone.

Day course ~ How To Help The Dying and Those Who Have Died (Powa Practice)

Day course ~ How To Help The Dying and Those Who Have Died (Powa Practice)

How To Help The Dying and
Those Who Have Died

Day course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Booking

When someone dies, although their body stays in this world and is buried or cremated, their mind goes to another life, rather like a bird leaving one nest to fly to another. With this basic understanding of rebirth, we can practise 'powa' to ensure that our loved ones find lasting peace. 'Powa' means transference of consciousness.

Through our loving prayers, we send or transfer the consciousness of someone who has recently died to a Pure Land of Buddha where they no longer experience any suffering. Our ability to help others to be reborn in a Pure Land depends upon the strength of our compassion and our reliance upon the Buddha of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara.

Discover this beautiful practice and the power of compassion and reliance upon holy beings such as Buddha Avalokiteshvara. No previous experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

  • These classes are held in the peaceful, spacious and comfortable meditation room at Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada. Half-day retreat ~ How To Stop Overthinking!

How To Stop Overthinking!

Half-day urban retreat with Judi Watson

Book Now

Every so often, we need to declutter. We usually feel great satisfaction when our kitchen, office, garage or bedroom is clean and tidy. But what about our mind?

Buddha taught that our mind is always moving, flitting from thought to thought without control. These fleeting thoughts might seem harmless, but our unstable attention makes our inner world cluttered and unpeaceful. This makes it almost impossible to live fully in the moment. While we all need to reflect, understand and make decisions, sometimes we can end up overthinking. Our thoughts become circular, repetitive, negative, unclear or stuck. We find it hard to ‘switch off’ which is both exhausting and unproductive.

In this short meditation retreat we will learn certain meditations and ways of thinking derived from Buddha’s teachings that can help us balance our mind, think more clearly and create a sense of calm as we navigate our world with all its stress and stimulation.

By decluttering our mind of repetitive or unwanted thoughts, we will be able to embrace the present wholeheartedly and live a much happier life.

Retreat ~ Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Annual Amitayus Retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Special Course ~ Liberating Wisdom
Feb

Special Course ~ Liberating Wisdom

Liberating Wisdom
Exploring the Wisdom Teachings
from the Three Principal Aspects of the Path

Special Weekend Course with Kadam Morten Clausen
(Partial booking available)

with a special Valentine Event Friday 7pm-8:30pm

Je Tsongkhapa’s legendary text, The Three Principal Aspects of the Path, is a concise presentation of the entire path to enlightenment. Especially the third aspect—Buddha’s teachings on the wisdom understanding ultimate truth—is presented with extraordinary clarity and startling profundity.

During this weekend, through talks, guided meditations, and discussions, Kadam Morten will guide us in exploring in particular the verses on wisdom. From the point of view of fulfilling our deepest wishes, this wisdom explains everything we need to know—from the everyday to the ultimate!

Topics include:

  • How can we let go of our unhappy minds?

  • How can we open our hearts to others and best help them?

  • How can we experience great joy and meaning in our lives?

  • What is emptiness, ultimate truth?

  • How do things actually exist?

  • How is freedom from suffering attainable?

  • What is enlightenment?

Taking this wonderful and liberating wisdom to heart will enhance our practice of the spiritual path, both Sutra and Tantra, and open us to a joyful and creative approach to life. In particular, it will empower us to transform all life experiences, including our problems, into our training of the mind so that they propel us along our path to lasting happiness and enlightenment.

Everyone is welcome.

NB: The explanation will be based on Geshe Kelsang’s translation and commentary from his book, The Mirror of Dharma with Additions. (This book is available at the Centre’s shop. E-book & mp3 formats are available to purchase and download from Tharpa Publications Canada site.)

The Source of Happiness and Goodness

Buddha Shakyamuni empowerment with commentary to Liberating Prayer
~ with Gen-la Kelsang Jampa

Friday Nov 29 - Sunday Dec 1

For Buddhists, faith in Buddha Shakyamuni is their spiritual life. To help us to develop and maintain strong faith in Buddha, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche composed the beautiful praise to Buddha Shakyamuni called Liberating Prayer.  Understanding and contemplating its meaning is the best method to develop faith in Buddha and his teachings, which is the root of all Dharma realizations.

During the Celebration, Gen-la will grant the empowerment of Buddha Shakyamuni and give teachings on Liberating Prayer.

Everybody welcome!
