Amitayus Retreat - Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Amitayus Retreat

Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Annual Retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

The greatest obstacles to the fulfilment of our wish to experience pure happiness are death and ignorance. Death destroys our opportunity to take the essence of our precious human life, and ignorance destroys our opportunity to develop a pure experience of Buddha’s teachings, the Dharma. To overcome these obstacles, we need to increase our lifespan and our wisdom. The principal method for doing this is the yoga of Buddha Amitayus, which is also a special method for increasing the positive power of our mind, or merit.

With a long life, we can complete our spiritual path in this very life. We can also engage in this special practice on behalf others when they are sick or in danger of dying. This traditional retreat is offered each year, usually in January or February. Although this is an in-depth Buddhist practice, it is suitable to everyone. No prior experience of Buddhism or meditation is required. Everyone is welcome!

Silence In The City
~ A Mantra Meditation Retreat ~

with Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Chodor

Experience the Transformative Power of Mantra in Silence

This silent retreat offers a rare opportunity to engage deeply with the ancient practice of mantra recitation—a practice designed to calm the mind, dissolve mental distractions, and bring about profound inner transformation.

Throughout the retreat, we will be guided in meditations on the breath using the timeless mantra OM AH HUM, known as the “mantra of all Buddhas.” For thousands of years, this mantra has been recited to cultivate the qualities of enlightened body, speech, and mind, offering a path to clarity, inner peace, and a good heart. Inspired by the compassionate mind of Bodhichitta, the mantra will be recited quietly (mentally), allowing its transformative power to unfold naturally within.

This retreat is open to everyone, regardless of prior experience.

Lamrim ~ Guided Meditation Retreat

Lamrim ~ Stages of the Path

Guided meditation retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Many people have a strong wish to live a happy and meaningful life. The best way to accomplish this is to improve our human nature and qualities through developing the capacity of our mind. In a retreat, we can take time away from our busy lives to meditate and focus our mind on this internal development.

The Buddhist Master Atisha (born 982 A.D.) wrote a text that compiled all of Buddha’s teachings into a special presentation called “Lamrim” or “stages of the path.” The Lamrim meditation series helps us to gain practical experience of all of Buddha’s instructions. Through immersing ourselves in the Lamrim on a retreat, we find ways to increase our daily happiness and gain a sense of confidence in the face of life’s challenges.

Each session will include short prayers, a brief talk, and a guided meditation. The retreat is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators.

Vajrasattva Purification Retreat

Vajrasattva Purification Retreat

Vajrasattva Purification Retreat

Half-day Retreat

We dedicate most of our time and energy trying to avoid problems by making changes to the external world. However, the main cause of our unhappiness and difficulties cannot be found in external conditions. It is the negative karma we have created in the past through performing harmful actions. By relying upon Vajrasattva, the Buddha of purification we will cleanse our mind of delusions, negativity and obstacles. Through special meditation and mantra recitation we have the great opportunity to purify our mind quickly, so that we can make swift progress on the spiritual path.

The practice on Sunday is accomplished within the sadhana Meditation and Recitation of Solitary Vajrasattva and guided by Gen Chodor.

Please note: This is a four day annual retreat undertaken by students of the Teacher Training Programme (TTP). The two sessions on Sunday are open to those who have some familiarity with Vajrasattva practice and would like to take part.
TTP students will continue the rest of the retreat on their own.

* There are some sadhana booklets for retreaters to use while at the Centre. Printed booklet and downloadable mp3 are also available for sale in the shop or through Tharpa Publications.

Half-day Retreat ~ Declutter the Mind

Declutter the Mind

Half-day Retreat with Jay Roberts

Create inner space, free from distractions

Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities, decisions, and choices we face in our day-to-day lives. Difficult people and challenging situations can take up a lot of mental space, making it hard to think clearly, act wisely, and live in the moment.

By training in meditation, we can create inner space and clarity that enable us to control our minds, regardless of external circumstances. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? In this course, we will explore how to use meditation to access the natural spaciousness and peace of our own minds.

"When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arise from within. This feeling of contentment and well-being helps us to cope with the busyness and difficulties of daily life." — Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The Meditation Handbook

Half-day retreat ~ How To Stop Overthinking!

Half-day retreat ~ How To Stop Overthinking!

How To Stop Overthinking!

Half-day urban retreat with Judi Watson

Every so often, we need to declutter. We usually feel great satisfaction when our kitchen, office, garage or bedroom is clean and tidy. But what about our mind?

Buddha taught that our mind is always moving, flitting from thought to thought without control. These fleeting thoughts might seem harmless, but our unstable attention makes our inner world cluttered and unpeaceful. This makes it almost impossible to live fully in the moment. While we all need to reflect, understand and make decisions, sometimes we can end up overthinking. Our thoughts become circular, repetitive, negative, unclear or stuck. We find it hard to ‘switch off’ which is both exhausting and unproductive.

In this short meditation retreat we will learn certain meditations and ways of thinking derived from Buddha’s teachings that can help us balance our mind, think more clearly and create a sense of calm as we navigate our world with all its stress and stimulation.

By decluttering our mind of repetitive or unwanted thoughts, we will be able to embrace the present wholeheartedly and live a much happier life.

Summer Retreat ~ Igniting the Fire of Wisdom

Igniting the Fire of Wisdom

The Blissful Path to Enlightenment

Summer Retreat with Kadampa Buddhist Nun & Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Demo

(Partial booking is available.)

This retreat will be based on the teachings received at the NKT-IKBU Summer Festival 2024 on the Heart Sutra and the practice of and 'The Uncommon Yoga of Inconceivability'.

Open to everyone, this is a rare and precious opportunity to gain guidance and deep experience of the practice of the Uncommon Yoga of Inconceivability.

This practice is a special method, unique to the practice of Vajrayogini, whereby we can attain the Pure Land of Keajra or Dakini Land, the Pure Land of Buddha Heruka and Buddha Vajrayogini, within this life without abandoning our present body.

This training is called ‘uncommon yoga’ because it is an uncommon practice of Vajrayogini Tantra. This training is called ‘inconceivability’ because it has inconceivable meaning, and gives us inconceivable meaning in this life and in life after life.

This is a precious opportunity to immerse ourselves in these sublime and meaningful meditations. Through taking these insights deep into our heart, we can integrate them into our daily life, thereby transforming every moment of our life into the blissful path to enlightenment.

"We should know that it is impossible for our body to reach the moon through its own power but our mind can reach the moon instantaneously simply by thinking about it. This shows that through gaining deep familiarity with thinking ‘I am my mind Vajrayogini’ we will easily reach the Pure Land of Keajra simply by engaging in the practice of the uncommon yoga of inconceivability.”
