Buddhist Art: The Wheel of Life

Buddhist Art: The Wheel of Life

with Vieslav Krystyan

Even if we contemplate deeply the most sublime works of art, we cannot gain benefits that compare with the benefits of contemplating and meditating on the diagram of the Wheel of Life, because this diagram reveals the complete path to enlightenment.

- Joyful Path of Good Fortune by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

The Wheel of Life is a beautiful piece of Buddhist art, inspired by Buddha himself, that illustrates the complete path to enlightenment.

Within it are Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths, showing us what we need to understand, abandon, practise, and attain in order to find true and lasting happiness.

It also depicts the Twelve Dependent-Related Links — a chain of cause and effect that reveals how we become bound within samsaric suffering.

This course will offer a practical and contemplative tour of the Wheel of Life, showing how we can use this powerful diagram to inspire our meditations and guide us along the spiritual path.

During the morning break, complimentary refreshments, tea, coffee, and snacks will be available in our community room - a relaxed opportunity to rest, ask questions, and connect with others.

The Temple shop will be open throughout the day, offering books and meditation resources to support your practice.

Everyone is welcome.

Healing with Every Breath - a taking & giving retreat

Healing with Every Breath

a taking & giving retreat

with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

Deeply rooted in the Kadampa Buddhist tradition is a practice called “Mounting Taking and Giving Upon the Breath”.

It is renowned for its ability to open the heart and bring a profound sense of healing and inner peace.

By combining breathing meditation with the practice of Taking and Giving, we gradually shift the mind away from self-centred patterns and towards a more spacious and altruistic way of being.

This practice strengthens concentration, deepens our love and compassion, and builds a wealth of positive energy.

In this way, even the simple act of breathing becomes a powerful spiritual practice.

At first, we engage in this practice during formal meditation sessions, but with familiarity it can gradually be carried into daily life.

Through steady practice, our mind gradually develops the compassionate intention of a Bodhisattva.

Everyone is warmly welcome to attend this powerful guided retreat.

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

Practical Introduction to the Buddhist Way of Life

with Gen Kelsang Suma

Buddhism offers a practical path for transforming our mind and improving our daily experience of life.

Through meditation and training in positive states of mind, we can gradually reduce stress, worry, and unhappiness, and instead develop qualities such as patience, compassion, and wisdom.

Buddha Shakyamuni said:
You are your own protector, and you are your own enemy.

This points to a powerful truth: our experiences of happiness and suffering depend largely on our own mind and how we respond to life’s challenges.

On this course, we will explore how to follow the Buddhist way of life in a practical and accessible way.

We will learn how to rely upon the Three Jewels — Buddha, Dharma (his teachings), and Sangha (our spiritual friends) - to help us gradually transform our mind from states of stress and negativity into states of peace, clarity, and compassion.

In this way, Buddhist practice becomes something we can bring into daily life, helping us respond to difficulties with greater wisdom and creating the causes for lasting inner peace and happiness.

This is a practical and encouraging introduction to Buddhism and the Buddhist way of life, suitable for those completely new, as well as those with some experience.

Love, Connection & Peace

~ A Day Retreat ~

with Gen Kelsang Chodor

The theme of this special guided retreat is meditation on loving kindness.

These meditations help us to develop warm and positive feelings towards others and strengthen our sense of connection with friends, family, and those around us.

Meditation on loving kindness opens the heart, and cultivating this good heart naturally leads to greater peace and happiness for ourselves and those around us.

This good heart is the very essence of the Mahayana path and the main cause of great compassion - the wish to protect all living beings from fear and suffering.

The retreat sessions include practical instructions, guided meditations, and time for questions and answers.

Between sessions, there is time to relax, rest, and connect with like-minded people in our community space.

The peaceful surroundings of Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada provide the ideal environment for developing inner calm and a peaceful mind.

Buddha & The Four Noble Truths
~ Day Course ~

with Celine Auffret

Discover a timeless method for understanding and overcoming suffering.

In this course, we explore the Four Noble Truths - Buddha’s first and most essential teaching - which reveals the true nature of our problems and shows a clear path to lasting freedom and happiness. According to the teachings of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, these insights are deeply practical and can be applied directly to our daily life. We begin to recognise the real causes of our difficulties within our own mind, and discover how to remove them by developing wisdom and inner peace.

Through clear explanations and guided meditations, this course will help you gain a new perspective on life - one that brings clarity, strength, and genuine hope.

Suitable for everyone, this is a powerful opportunity to learn how to move beyond problems and begin a path towards lasting inner freedom.

Staying Strong When Things Go Wrong

Staying Strong When Things Go Wrong

When things go wrong in life - which they inevitably do - we often respond negatively, blaming the situation or the people involved. This can feel like a “double whammy” - not only do difficulties arise, but we also add our own unhappiness, frustration, or even depression on top.

  • Respond to challenges with calm, compassion, and wisdom

Half-day course ~ Self-Love & Self-Care: A Buddhist perspective

Self-Love & Self-Care:
a Buddhist perspective

Half-day course with Sandra Lewis

Self-criticism and self-loathing cause us suffering, sabotaging our ability to grow into the person we wish to be. Superficial affirmations may offer small temporary relief, but they cannot address the deeper causes of our self-criticism and self-loathing. Unless we address these negative minds directly, they will continue to obscure our true nature and undermine personal growth.

In this half-day course, we will explore how relying on fragile sources of confidence - such as achievements, the approval of others, appearance, or social status - leaves us vulnerable when these are absent. This vulnerability often leads to low self-esteem and discouragement.

By developing genuine self-confidence, grounded in reality and an awareness of our limitless potential, we naturally cultivate authentic self-love, self-care, and self-respect. We become more gentle with ourselves and others, while opening the door to real spiritual growth. In this way, we can develop into the happy, wise, and compassionate person we long to be.

Lamrim ~ Stages of the Path

Guided meditation retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Many people have a strong wish to live a happy and meaningful life. The best way to accomplish this is to improve our human nature and qualities through developing the capacity of our mind. In a retreat, we can take time away from our busy lives to meditate and focus our mind on this internal development.

The Buddhist Master Atisha (born 982 A.D.) wrote a text that compiled all of Buddha’s teachings into a special presentation called “Lamrim” or “stages of the path.” The Lamrim meditation series helps us to gain practical experience of all of Buddha’s instructions. Through immersing ourselves in the Lamrim on a retreat, we find ways to increase our daily happiness and gain a sense of confidence in the face of life’s challenges.

Each session will include short prayers, a brief talk, and a guided meditation. The retreat is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators.

The main teachings are based on Advice from Atisha’s Heart, a timeless piece of heartfelt wisdom from the great Indian Buddhist Master Atisha, who played a central role in bringing pure Buddhism to Tibet. Deeply admired for his wisdom, humility, and compassion, Atisha’s instructions continue to resonate today - offering clear and meaningful advice on how to live with kindness, peace, and purpose.

By keeping Atisha’s Advice in our heart:

  • we can maintain a peaceful and happy mind

  • our human nature and good qualities will naturally improve

  • we will become a positive example in this troubled world

  • and we will swiftly progress toward the supreme happiness of enlightenment

As Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso says,

“Simply putting this Advice into practice we will naturally become a Bodhisattva, a holy compassionate being who is the object of everybody's love and respect.”

Half-day Retreat ~ Resting the Mind

Learn how to relax your mind and body

Half-day Retreat with Ricardo Díaz Alarcón

Do you ever struggle to achieve deep rest and relaxation, or wish to find more mental peace and a positive mindset? If so, this meditation retreat is designed for you.

With the constant demands of daily life - family, work, and relationships - it can often feel impossible to truly relax and find peace within ourselves. We might try to relax by walking in nature, resting in an armchair, or going on a holiday, but if our mind remains stressed, anxious, or preoccupied, genuine relaxation is not possible.

In this meditation retreat, we will explore simple but powerful meditation techniques that enable you to deeply relax without the need to rely on external stimuli. This will help you discover profound inner peace, joy, and a fresh, positive perspective on your life.

You will also learn how to let go of negative states of mind and guide yourself to a place of profound stillness, helping restore both your mental and physical well-being while discovering a deeper sense of purpose.
